Overcoming the Fear of Closing a Sale

Overcoming the Fear of Closing a SaleOvercoming the Fear of Closing a SaleYou put in a lot of work prospecting, qualifying, building rapport, designing a proposal, and delivering presentations, and now its time to close the sale. But maybe your palms begin to sweat. Your heart starts beating faster. Your stomach begins to churn. You become increasingly self-conscious. Youre afraid to do it. Sound familiar? Youre not alone. This scenario describes how many sales professionals feel when theyre trying to close a deal. But thankfully, anyone can move through the fear to a confident close with the right approach and mindset. Remember Your Why Take some time to look past your sales quotas and commission goals and remember why you do what you do. Think about what makes you passionate about the product or service that youre selling, and list the ways that it ultimately helps people. This is your why. If you approach every close as a chance to personally ensure that a prospect is having t heir needs met and their problems solved - a chance to help and serve them - then it can suddenly binnenseem a little less scary. Yes, a sale does result in a profit, but more importantly, it results in a happy customer. Dont Get Discouraged by a No Hearing no from a prospect doesnt necessarily mean that you should give up and move on. If you ask for a sale and receive a no, it doesnt mean there will be no sale. It often means that the prospect needs more information or you need to help them more clearly see the value of the product or service youre selling. Fear of rejection is often a major source of anxiety for salespeople. In most cases, you shouldnt abandon a close after getting the first - or even third - no, although you may be tempted to. Instead, keep building rapport, asking and answering questions, demonstrating value, and showing your prospect that you can provide the solution to their problems. Finding out why the prospect gave you a no will help you better understa nd a prospects needs so you can better explain how you can meet them. Many successful salespeople look at a no as an opportunity to get to a yes. In fact, you can even ask a prospect what it would take to turn that no into a yes. Have a Plan for Handling Objections By the time you get to the close, you should have a comprehensive understanding of your prospects needs and demonstrated how you can meet them. If you asked the right questions, then you should also have a solid understanding of all of the possible objections that could come up during that particular customers close. If you know the possible objections, then you can prepare responses to them. Or better yet, you can try using the preemptive strike method - bringing up and then busing objections before the prospect even has a chance to do it. You can prepare responses to common objections you see across customers, but also make sure youre able to handle any objections that are particular to that company. Prepared salesp eople are confident closers. Brush up on how to close a sale, whether youre a beginner or a veteran. Get to know at least three basic strategies for closing a sale. Only Promise What You Can Deliver Making promises that youre not certain you can deliver on is bound to cause any salesperson anxiety before the close. But if you enter a closing conversation knowing that you have not over-promised and do not run the risk of under-delivering, then itll be easier for you to view the close as a natural part of the geschftliches miteinander cycle. While you shouldnt fall prey to the attitude of being owed a sale, you can go into the close with more confidence knowing youre done the best you could do to earn the business. Know When its Time to Move On Even the best sales professionals in the world understand that no one can close every sale. Remembering that can help take an awful lot of pressure off your back. And the more relaxed you are during a sales close, the better off you and your prospect will be. If you asked for the sale a few times and cant get the prospect to become a customer, you may need to regroup, develop a new strategy and take some time away from the prospect. Anxiety is often caused when trying too hard to close a deal or trying too often to close a deal that just cant be closed. If you have approached a closing opportunity with a positive attitude, knowing that you have delivered your best and that your proposal is a sound one that makes business sense and your customer simply says not interested, it may be time to move on. Remember The Close is Not the End Another cause of closing anxiety is the belief that closing is the final step of the sales cycle. Closing a sale is actually a chance to begin a new kind of relationship with a prospect. Once you ask for and earn a sale, they become a customer - hopefully a loyal, repeat customer that can be a positive reference for you in the future.

College experts share 8 points of wisdom not taught in a class

College experts share 8 points of wisdom not taught in a classCollege experts share 8 points of wisdom not taught in a classIt takes a combination of tangibles and intangibles to succeed in todays dynamic and ever-evolving business world. Competition is fierce. bedrngnis only do employees and job-seekers need to reach their mark through performance-meaayad benchmarks, to achieve continued job success an engaging personality and relationship-building skills are needed. Weve asked professors and administrators at several universities throughout the nation to share their words of wisdom that arent found in lectures or in textbooks.Be eager to learnYour anfhreres and colleagues are teachers conveying information that you have to know. You have to understand that you will be tested on it under the most stressful of circumstances, says Steven Miller, coordinator of undergraduate studies for the Rutgers University Department of Journalism and Media Studies in New Brunswick, NJ. Your grade w ill be your paycheck, he says. If you want to earn the highest mark the most money - you have to pass all of the exams with the highest marks. If you want to be held back, dont perform at 100 percent, he adds.Be a networking superstarEffective networking is vital to job success. This is true for students of any age, including adult learners, says Laura Sankovich, faculty chair, MBA, where she oversees operations for the MBA at Capella University in Coeur dAlene, ID. She recommends volunteering on committees and says networking with chambers of commerce and professional organizations specific to your career or area of study is essential to broaden your network.Volunteering on committees gives prospective employers an opportunity to see your work in action, Sankovich adds. She also points out that students of all ages can feel like earning the degree is enough, but thats rarely the case.To set yourself apart and give you the best opportunity to get the job you want in the career you desire takes networking and volunteering to show prospective employers what you have to offer, she continues. These steps will keep you top-of-mind when the employers in your circle have a need. Who knows? They might even create a job just for you.Be willing to take on more workHaving a strong work ethic will make you shine. Its working both smarter and harder, says Thao Nelson, senior associate director, undergraduate career services, at Indiana Universitys Kelley School of Business in Bloomington, IN. As a manager, I notice when staff come early and stay late. So show up and work hard, you will get noticed and rewarded. Nelson advises to say yes and take risks. Raise your hand for projects and assignments, even if you feel youre not qualified or ready, she says. You might fail, and thats okay. If you make a mistake, own it, and learn from it. Eventually, you will be the go to person.Realize your boss can be your best advocateNelson says to make your boss shine and you will too. Yo ur boss is your best advocate, so its important to make them look good without coming off as a kiss-up, she explains. Offer help when you can.Mind your body languageWhat you say is only part of what you are communicating when interacting in the business world. Body language can be a powerful tool for career success, given employers may interpret your level of interest in a position within just seconds based on your nonverbal signals, says Stacy Moore, director of career services, Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, PA.From the firmness of your handshake to your facial expressions, posture and eye contact, these subtle cues can go a long way when it comes to conveying your message and value to a potential employer, she added. Be sure to make eye contact during a handshake, stand/sit up straight and become aware of your nonverbal cues to ensure you are communicating the message you intend.Ask for what you wantRegina Luttrell, Ph.D., assistant professor, public relations, at the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY, states to never be afraid to ask for what you want. Use your voice, speak up, and ask, she says. Is the worst possible outcome a no? Perhaps. But unless you ask, you will never know. Sometimes, that ask is a door that opens.Be tenaciousAlthough professors can teach students their craft be that writing, pulling together reports, campaigns, or data theres more to do, Luttrell says. We cant, however, teach a student to have the drive and willingness to go above and beyond, to be curious, or take chances, she continues. Those qualities must come from within the person.Negotiate your salaryYou only get one chance, says Luttrell. Use it well, she stresses. This is especially important for females. Once a person is hired standard raises tend to fluctuate between 2.5% 3%.

Your complete guide to mastering your early retirement

Your complete guide to mastering your early retirementYour complete guide to mastering your early retirementIm waking up every damn morning with a smile on my face with the following 18-or-so hours ahead of me to do with as I please. The other 6 hours or so Im sleeping. Ive found I dont need a ton of sleep.I have no bosses to impress, no time cards to punch and no stupid deadlines or endless meetings just for the sake of team unity. Inearly retirement, you truly are the master of your domain.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraBut, it wont always be quite as easy for everyone, and it all starts with a very simple and unifying themeYou need to do something in early retirement thats your purposeI can talk about purpose until Im blue in the face because, well, it really is that important. Not that I relish the thought of losing enough oxygen for my face to get blue, but you get the ide a.Purpose iskinda important. Its important because having the entire day ahead of you with nothing on the schedule comes with ita whole other set of potential problems. When the buck stops with you, shit gets real.Do you want shit to get real? I mean, thatreal? Do you want the responsibility of owning your entire day without the structure that a full-time job often provides? Its similar to being your own boss or working for yourself. It sounds good in theory, but you also need to own it. You need to be a special kind of person to manage yourself. Its not as easy as it sounds. To successfully manage your own time in early retirement, you need to know yourselfwell. You need to know what makes you happy and what doesnt. You need to balance your fun with your work and know how much time to devote to each individual thing. If you think thats easy, then you might be in for a world of hurt.On the flip side, you cant over-schedule yourself after quitting your jobI have fallen terribly close to this point in early retirement. Im so motivated to try new things and get involved that, quite frankly, I have a tough time saying no. Im always looking for mora. And, thats not always a good thing. For instance, I have this huge blog that Im maintaining. My wife and I also run a growing YouTube channel atA Streamin Life. What else?I startedanother blogaboutdigital marketingI do consulting work at Rockstar FinanceI write for bloggers/websites on specific projectsIm involved in several blog projectsAnd, my wife and I travel the country for a livingAll this stuff takes time, and Id be lying if I said that time never gets away from me. Even after retiring early, I sometimes feel that there arent enough hours in the day, andthats my own fault.I just like being involved with things. Things that keep me focused and energized. Ultimately, a strongly believe thats good. It is.But, the trick is toproperly manage your timeso you dont feel like you have a job again. After all, Iretired earlyin large part to recapture my time, and the last thing that I want to do is sign myself up for enough projects that I feel like I dont have enough time to justrelax and enjoy life.Managing your time is crucial.Youll fail without time-managementForget the money component of early retirement for a minute. Of course, we all know that we need money before quitting our jobs. Thats the most obviously and clear-cut aspect of FIRE.What isnt so clear-cut is, well, us. You and me.Life is an organic entity. We arent using a bunch of repeatable mathematical equations to rule our time like we might use to come up withhow much money well need before calling it quits. If you cant manage your time, you wont be happy in early retirement. It really is that simple. You cant quit your work structure if you cant replicate that with abetter structure. Its a structure thatyoudesign and impose uponyourself. This is the hard part. And, I cannot teach you how to do this, but I can give you the basic outline of what a s olid structure looks like. What times of the daydo you feel most productive? Are you anearly morning person or a late riser? Are your hobbieseasy enough to pursueon a daily basis?Do you have aone year, two years and five-year goals?Adirectionis critical, and understanding how you work the best is how to set yourself up on the path to head that way.For example,I know that I do mybest work in the morning hours. Therefore, I focus on the most critical aspects of my life in the morning. Everything else takes second priority. The morning is my time to focus. When I can properly focus, I can get my work done on my side projects. I feel productive and motivated to repeat that process the next day and Im actively strutting in the direction that I need to go.The more that you understand about yourself, the better equipped youll be tocustomize your lifein a way that makes sense.Stop worrying about the damn risksFirst, let me preface this discussion with a very simple statementAnything can happen in early retirement. You might fall down a flight of stairs the day after you call it quits, break your leg and undergo a series of painful and expensive surgeries.Or, you might get into a car accident. Or a train wreck. Or contract a disease. Or*fill in the blank*. The point is that yes, things happen. Markets crash. People over-spend.Theres no doubt that quitting your full-timesource of incomein your 30s, and expecting to live not 20, 30, or even 40 more yearstry, 60 or 70, without a dedicated income for more than half of your life, is a risk. But for most of us, its a calculated risk. But, heres an important question that we need to ask ourselves. What about the risks of staying at our jobs? especially stressful ones. AsABC reports A growing body of research stands testament to this fact lack of sleep has been shown to tax the hearts of the stressed executive and the stressed day worker alike.Layoffs, the report continues, can take their psychic and physiologic toll in the executiv e suite and on the production line the burden on those left behind, who work more overtime to shoulder a heavier workload, can be life-shortening and living in fear of losing a job, or staying put in a hostile workplace, also boosts the risk of an earlier cardiac death.I hate the risk ofnot retiring earlymore than the opposite. To work the vast majority of our life and then retire during the portion of our life where weremore likely to get sickis a dreadful thought. To develop krebs. Suffer from mobility-inhibiting aches and pains. Its painful to even think about.Consider this graph fromCancer.gov.The wide majority who develop cancer are above the age of 50.The highest incidents of cancer occur between 65 and 74 which, coincidently, happens to coincide closely with the age that we can draw social security without penalty 62.Does anyone else see a problem with this?Risks run in both directions, ladies and gentlemen. Were wise not to hone in on the risks OF early retirement and ignore the risks of NOT taking your life (and your time) into your own hands. To me, itsway more risky to retire during the period when were most likely to develop a health problemthan it is much earlier in life.At what point do we begin to consider the risks of NOT retiring early and weigh those against the risks of quitting the hinweis race early?Risk is a two-way street, my friends.Every once in a while, do something insaneIvewritten about this one before Comfort zones crush our ability to improve our lives. They keep us wrapped up in a cocoon of mush, complacent and completely relaxed. Reflection and bettering our lives is often the furthest thing from our minds when were in these zones.Instead of going to the gym to begin that new fitness program, we give ourselves an excuse to stay home. Rather than dropping by the neighborhood pot luck to meet the neighbors and network, we catch the latest episode of insert popular TV sitcom here because I honestly have no idea.It is natural to want comfort. And occasionally, theres nothing wrong with a little time in our comfort zones. But spending too much time in this zone is detrimental to our progress. Get out of it.Remember that time that we gave a speech about financial independence in front of hundreds of people? I do, because that was just a couple of months ago at the RV Entrepreneur Summit.Okay, while I wouldnt consider that insane, it definitely got us out of our comfort zones. We were nervous as hell before going up there, but once we got up on stage, everything fell right into place.Confidence is a convenient virtueI am, like, super duper confident. Confident to a fault.I firmly believe that what we are doing is the absolute right thing, and weve made our decision. We are jumping in head first and not looking back. I quit a high paying and relatively low-stress job in theInformation Technology industryfor a life of freedom. And Im damn proud of what were doing.Confidence is very different than arrogance. I dont be lieve that Im always right. I believe that I make the very best decisions that I can base on the information I have at the time. If Im wrong, then Im wrong. Big deal.We fix it and move on.Life sucks when we spend it second-guessing ourselves. So, I dont. I believe that things will work out. I know that we are flexible and will roll with the punches.Im not worried about health care (gasp). I dont care who ourpresidentis. I refuse to let external factors that I cannot control dictate my life. The only thing that I can control is me. My life. My reactions. My motivations.Confidence is key to keeping a sound mind and determined future. The more confident you are, the better prepared youll be to make early retirement work. Why?Because early retirement, just like life, is a mind game. If youwin the battle inside your head, youll win the battle outside of it as well. What does financial independence and early retirement actually mean to you?For me, financial independence is simple it means that you are not beholden to a job to provide for your livelihood.Instead, your wealth acquired through a high level of income or aggressive savings plan, supports your lifestyle. While you may still work, you dont need to. You work because you enjoy it.To my wife, financial independence is a choice. It refers to the ability to choose the life that we all desire and live it as the person that we all choose to be.Whatever it means to you, make sure that you understand it. This is your guiding principle thatll help ensure youre on the straight and narrow. This article originally appeared on ThinkSaveRetire. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How understanding conversation styles can make you successful

How understanding conversation styles can make you successfulHow understanding conversation styles can make you successfulThough no two peoples conversational styles are exactly alike, tzu siche are patterns that tend to characterize styles.Expecting shorter pauses between turns, and perceiving long pauses as uncomfortable silences, tends to go along with other linguistic habits that together make up what I call high-involvement style.Expecting longer pauses and being more comfortable with silence are among the linguistic habits that make up what I call high-considerateness style.Think about it this way we all want to be considerate, and we all want to show that were involved in a conversation, but speakers of one style tend to place more emphasis on showing involvement, while speakers of the other style tend to emphasize showing considerateness.Lets consider a hypothetical conversation between two friends, Tammy and Carolyn. If Carolyn is telling a story and Tammy encourages her wit h yeah, uh-huh and right, Carolyn probably will assume thats listener talk, and wont feel interrupted. But what if Tammy says whole sentences like I know what you mean the saatkorn thing happened to me. That could feel like listener talk, too - or like an attempt to grab the floor and start telling her own story. And how about if Tammy meant it as listener talk and Carolyn takes it as an attempt to steal the floor? Carolyn might stop talking, thinking she welches interrupted, and Tammy might start her own turn, interpreting Carolyns silence to mean she welches finished. Who created that interruption? Tammy, because she began speaking? Or Carolyn, because she stopped? Id say neither created the interruption single-handedly. It resulted from the differences in their conversational styles.By filling a pause that threatened to become an uncomfortable silence, Tammy was showing enthusiastic listenership, as high-involvement style requires a good person makes sure to show shes involved. B y expecting a listener to be relatively wordless, Carolyn was exercising a high-considerateness style a good person makes sure to leave plenty of room for others to talk.Linguistic habits that go along with high-considerateness style also include standing farther apart (in other words, giving more physical as well as verbal space) speaking more softly and with relatively level pitch and minimal gestures talking more about impersonal topics and less about personal ones being relatively indirect about conveying something negative or getting your way and not asking personal questions.Linguistic habits that go along with high-involvement style include expecting shorter pauses between turns - or maybe no pause at all to avoid an uncomfortable silence, a speaker signals shes ready to relinquish the floor by winding down, expecting a listener to chime in before she comes to a complete stop. It also includes standing closer when you talk speaking in a more animated way and often more loudl y telling more personal stories and making the point of the story relatively dramatic being more relatively direct and asking personal questions to show interest and caring.Differences in habits and assumptions about any of these ways of talking can lead to frustration, even between good friends, because the same way of speaking can have different meanings. Being quiet while listening really can mean youre not interested - and so can starting to speak before your friends finished. For example, Ruth and Alice were taking a walk by a lake, a lovely setting replete with the beauties of flora and fauna. Alice was telling Ruth about something going on in her life, and Ruth was listening with attention and empathy. But Ruth was also enjoying the natural surroundings, and the pleasure of sharing them with her friend. So whenever they passed a particularly pretty or interesting sight - a duck gliding on the surface of the lake with a string of tiny ducklings behind her, or a patch of flowe rs with extraordinary color - Ruth pointed it out.Suddenly Alice burst out You havent listened to a word Ive said Ruth was stunned - and stung. Of course shed been listening. Calling attention to things she thought Alice would want to take notice of did not mean she wasnt. If she didnt point them out while Alice was talking, her friend might miss them by the time her story was over, the thing of interest would be long gone. For Ruth, sharing the beauty of their surroundings was a show of involvement just as surely as was listening to her friends story. Quick comments about something in the environment are not really interruptions, just as a dinner guest might murmur a request to pass the salt without interrupting another dinner guests long story. In both cases, the remarks are obviously fleeting parenthetical asides. But heres where conversational style differences wreak havoc in Alices high-considerateness style, listening means not talking anyone who is talking is not listening. I f that means a listener must forego sharing the beauty of a passing sight - or salt on her food - its a price she has to pay. Both friends have had a lifetime of evidence that their own conversational styles make sense, because members of their families and the people they grew up with shared them.We learn conversational styles at the same time that we learn language, as children growing up, so experience tells us that the way we show good intentions is the right way, and those who play by other rules are wrong.Actually, we rarely realize they are playing by other rules we think theyre breaking rules. (The title of Haru Yamadas book about communication between Japanese and Americans, Different Games, Different Rules, can also apply to communication between people who speak the same language but have different conversational styles.)Of course a listener should be quiet Thats the definition of listening. Of course a listener should talk along to show enthusiasm and involvement Other wise how do you know shes paying attention? Both styles make sense, each in its own way.A good listener can emphasize considerateness by being silent, even if it means forgoing observations that she thinks the speaker would appreciate and a good listener can emphasize involvement at the same time that shes listening - by talking.Talking across styles is all the more difficult because each style fosters its own capabilities. If youre used to hearing listeners talk while youre speaking, it doesnt distract you it encourages you.But if youre used to listeners being quiet, it does you cant keep your focus if someone whos supposed to be listening keeps talking. Its hard to believe that what wouldnt distract you might distract someone else, or that someone else - especially a friend - wouldnt be distracted by what distracts you.Conversational style differences cast doubt on the adage Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. If your conversational styles differ, what you woul d have others do unto you may be the very thing that bugs them when you do it unto them.Excerpted fromYOURE THE ONLY ONE I CAN TELLby Deborah Tannen.Copyright 2017 by Deborah Tannen. Tips for Having a Good Relationship With Your Boss- The Muse

Tips for Having a Good Relationship With Your Boss- The MuseTips for Having a Good Relationship With Your BossWorried what your boss thinks of you- if they like you, trust you, and think your contributions match up to their expectations? If so, youre not alone. Considering youll end up spending 10 years of your life at work, getting along with your boss is not only critical to succeeding in your career, but matters for your overall happiness and engagement at the office. With that in mind, here are three easy ways to develop an effective, productive, and mutually rewarding relationship with your manager (even if theyre a tough cookie to crack) 1. Stop Using Email to Have Important ConversationsIs email your go-to forum for everything? In certain cases, it could be hurting your relationship. Even if its your managers favorite medium, its time to break the pattern of always relying on this.Opt for in-person meetings if the conversations beyond a task or agenda-setting item- for example, if youre asking for something or apologizing for a mistake. Not only is it just polite, itll most likely lead to a more productive discussion and help ensure you and your boss are truly on the same page. All of us are the worst possible version of ourselves in digital media, adds Celeste Headlee, journalist and author of We Need to Talk How to Have Conversations That Matter. We might think we are persuasive in email, but scientifically, we are so much more persuasive in person.2. landsee Your Relationship With Your Boss as a Two-Way StreetToo often, we see ourselves as the executors and our managers as the creators of work, forgetting that our manager is also responsible for their own assignments. So, if you want to immediately improve your relationship, ask them this simple question What can I do for you? By opening up this conversation, you open the door for them to delegate projects they may not have otherwise considered. And, taking on stretch assignments can improve your visibil ity and lead to career advancement. Wondering what else you should be talking about with your manager? Read this 8 Questions You Should Be Asking Your Boss.3. Be a Good Recipient of Feedback (and Ask Pointed Questions)Get in the mindset that you want actual, honest feedback- and be physically ready for it. Even if the feedback seems insensitive, kindly explain how the approach hurt your feelings, but then ask questions to get at the root of the problem, making it clear you really do want to improve. If youre a good feedback recipient, your boss will be more likely to share valuable advice with you, which will ultimately help you grow. And, if youre finding that you only getting positive feedback, ask your manager to be more specific, or try mentioning something you wish youd handled differently. If you open a dialogue with self-reflection, you give your boss- who might be uncomfortable giving you criticism- the opportunity to go on the learning journey with you, advises Denise Cox, VP of Technical Services at Cisco Systems. Finally, dont wait for periodic reviews to get constructive feedback. If you can, ask your manager to schedule time to meet one-on-one weekly or monthly.Research by Gallup shows that 50% of employees leave their job to get away from their manager to improve their overall life at some point in their career, which means building the right kind of relationship with your boss can make a real difference to your job satisfaction and career progression. Plus, itll make your friends and family find you much more enjoyable to be around outside of work.

3 Resume Mistakes to Note - Spark Hire

3 Resume Mistakes to Note - Spark HireAs a hiring manager or employer, you know how many resumes flood into your inbox once you post a job opening. Over the span of just a week the number could stack up to the hundreds. As you are well aware, it can take hours to sift through all of these resumes, and one of the best ways of whittling down a large stack of them is by pinpointing silly mistakes. Vocabulary, layout, grammar and overall visual appeal may seem like petty reasons to rule out a resume, but when you have hundreds to attend to it can shorten the pile quickly. Take a look at these four resume mistakes you should note and use to help you rule out candidates easily.VocabularyIts true that a good, strong vocabulary does not mean that a person is intelligent. Conversely, a bad vocabulary does not denote lack of intelligence. However, when it comes to resumes and applying to jobs, bad vocabulary and spelling errors does indicate laziness and carelessness. If a candidate has a pret ty impressive resume with a ton of experience, then perhaps its OK to let some spelling errors slip- we all make mistakes right? On the other pfote though, if this candidate did not take the time to edit their resume and/or have someone else take a look at it, then how important is this position to them? How bad do they want it? If they were serious about getting a job, they would take the time to ensure their resume is up-to-par.LayoutThere is nothing worse than a terrible resume layout. As stated by the Business Insider, job seekers only have about six seconds to grab your attention. From your end you probably know how much time you spend on one single resume until you lose complete interest. When the layout is terrible and hard to follow, you probably spend even less time. Savvy job seekers know this and format their resumes accordingly. In fact, the Insider even provided an image that shows where the eyes of most hiring managers fall when it comes to certain layouts. Take a look at the photo for yourself below. The more organized and clear resume was looked at more carefully, and eyes fell on almost all of the information. If you pick up a resume with a horrendous layout, you might just want to put it right back down.planIts no secret that most of us flock towards things that are visually appealing. We like pretty things and theres nothing wrong with that So when a candidate goes that extra mile to put a bit of flair on their resume in order to stand out from the rest, its definitely noteworthy. In fact a resume with an interesting design or flair may be the first one you look at. However, loaded resumes are big no-nos. Its great that candidates are willing to go the extra mile to get the position, but if their resume is so loaded with colors, designs and odd text that its difficult to read whats actually on there, then it defeats the purpose. They want to catch your eye, but you have to be able to read their information, too Otherwise, how will you know i f they are qualified or not? Needless to say, a loaded resume is bad news too.It may seem a bit petty or wrong to weed out candidates this way, but when you have hundreds of resumes to sift through, this is a great elimination process. Plus, if candidates arent taking the time to weed through their resume with a fine-toothed comb, then they need to make some changes on their part. Its a competitive market out there and job seekers are well aware of the actions they need to take to come out on top.namen Courtesy of Careerealism

kriegsmarine studentencorps Enlistment Bonus Programkriegsmarine studentencorps Enlistment Bonus ProgramThe Marine Corps Enlistment Bonus Program provides monetary and education enlistment incentives to attract highly qualified applicants into designated programs containing critically short Military Occupational Specialties (MOS). These bonuses are offered to fill technical fields with high prerequisites and to entice applicants to ship to recruit training during certain times of the year. (MOS Bonus and Shipping Bonus) Bonuses in the military typically are offered at two times in a military members career. Depending upon the needs of the military, just signing up can make you some extra money. Agreeing to go to boot camp at a specific time of the year can add to that bonus, and when your term of enlistment is expired, you can also receive a re-enlistment bonus depending upon the job you have in the military. Some bonus programs will offer active duty and reservist members of the mil itary to actually change Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) at the time of their re-enlistment to fill critically needed personnel needs in some career fields. Marine Corps MOS Bonus and the Shipping Bonus Recruits seeking employment in the military and interested in a highly needed MOS may be eligible for signing bonuses when joining any branch of service. Specifically, the United States Marine Corps seeks recruits that are highly qualified to receive up to two enlistment incentives The USMC MOS Bonus is basically a signing bonus for joining the Marine Corps. To fully qualify for the MOS Bonus, a recruit must stay in the needed MOS throughout the duration of the enlistment time. The needs of the Marine Corps change throughout the year and from year to year. Depending upon these needs for certain MOSs, open ship to boot camp dates, and amounts may vary. Contact a local Marine Corps recruiter for the most current specific details on the most critical needs of the Marine Corps. Typical requirements for shipping bonuses for a recruit agreeing to depart for boot camp are the following If you agree to ship during the months of December and May you can receive up to $3,000 after graduation from boot camp. For the months of June through November, you can receive $2,000. The typical term of service to be eligible for shipping bonuses are 5 years in length, and you should score at least a 50 on the AFQT. Marine Corps Re-Enlistment Bonus During mora than 15 years of sustained combat missions for the country, with no end in sight, the need for the warfig hter positions are just as important as the highly technical MOSs for the Marine Corps. Increasing numbers within the Infantry, RECON, Artillery, as well as highly technical MOSs like Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Cyber Warfare, Intelligence Specialist, is needed during times of high combat op tempo in the Marine Corps. Some of the first time re-enlistees in the Infantry can receive $10-15,000, and more senior members can get $25,000 or more as a bonus. The USMC Reserves offer monetary and education bonuses for re-enlisting for a specific term of service. Some bonuses are paid in lump sum or spread through the term of re-enlistment in specific MOS. Americans becoming more socially isolated, but not lonelier

Americans becoming more socially isolated, but not lonelier Americans becoming more socially isolated, but not lonelier Are Americans becoming lonelier? On May 1, NPR reported on a survey about loneliness conducted by Cigna, a large health insurance company. Cigna asked over 20,000 American adults if they agreed with statements like “People are around me but not with me” and “No one really knows me well.” The survey found that younger Americans were lonelier than older Americans. But while doing research for my upcoming book on empathy and social relationships, I found that the story is a bit more complicated than this. How to study lonelinessThe Cigna study is far too limited to tell us why young people appear to be lonelier. Is it because younger people are in a normal lonelier life stage before finding a partner and having children? Or is it because there have been generational increases in loneliness? The only way scientists could know if there have been generational changes would be to compare young people today to young people in earlier times. The Cigna survey used the UCLA Loneliness Scale , one of the best available measures of loneliness. But just because a survey has 20,000 respondents doesn’t mean it’s high quality. Who were the respondents? Did they reflect the general U.S. population in terms of age, gender and other factors? Without more details about the survey methods, it’s hard to know how to interpret it.Thankfully, some peer-reviewed studies have examined changes over time in loneliness and social isolation. Loneliness is the subjective feeling of social disconnection. Social isolation is more objective. It includes living alone, having very few social ties, not having people to confide in, and not spending time with others very often.Although lonely people are sometimes more socially isolated, this is not always the case. It’s possible to feel lonely, even when surrounded by people. And it’s possible to have a few friends, enjoying deep connections with them along with times of solitude.Research finds that loneliness and social isolation are equ ally bad for health. On average, people who report being lonely have a 26 percent increased risk of death compared to those who are not lonely. Those who live alone have a 32 percent increased risk of death, and those who are socially isolated have a 29 percent increased risk of death.Loneliness over timeOne study tracked changes in over 13,000 college students from 1978 to 2009. The researchers found that millennials actually reported less loneliness than people born earlier. But since the study was on college students, the researchers wondered whether they would find these results in a more general American population. So, they tracked changes over time in a nationally representative sample of over 385,000 students high school students between 1991 to 2012.In order to measure loneliness, participants were asked whether they agreed with statements that indicated loneliness, like “I often feel left out of things” and “I often wish I had more good friends.” Statements like “ There is always someone I can turn to if I need help” and “I usually have a few friends around I can get together with” measured social isolation. As in the first study, the researchers found students reported declines in loneliness over time. However, they actually found increases over time in social isolation. This corresponds with nationally representative government data showing that the percentage of people in the U.S. who live alone nearly doubled from 7.6 percent in 1967 to 14.3 percent in 2017.Americans also seem to have fewer confidantes. The average number of people that Americans say they can talk to about important things declined from 2.94 in 1985 to 2.08 in 2004.Experiencing isolationTaken together, this published research finds that young people in the U.S. may be more socially isolated in recent years, but are paradoxically becoming less lonely. There doesn’t appear to be an epidemic of loneliness, but perhaps there is one of social isolation. It’s possible th at socially isolated people are turning to social media to treat their feelings of loneliness. This could make them feel less lonely in the short run, but these connections can be more about quantity than quality. They aren’t necessarily the people Americans get together with in person or turn to when we need help. And people often use social media when they are actually alone in a room on a screen. In my view, future research should try to better understand why there are different trends in loneliness versus isolation. But, since both are equally bad for our health, it’s important to nurture our connections with others â€" both online and off.Sara Konrath, Assistant Professor of Philanthropic Studies, Indiana University-Purdue University IndianapolisThis article was originally published on The Conversation.
