Overcoming the Fear of Closing a SaleOvercoming the Fear of Closing a SaleYou put in a lot of work prospecting, qualifying, building rapport, designing a proposal, and delivering presentations, and now its time to close the sale. But maybe your palms begin to sweat. Your heart starts beating faster. Your stomach begins to churn. You become increasingly self-conscious. Youre afraid to do it. Sound familiar? Youre not alone. This scenario describes how many sales professionals feel when theyre trying to close a deal. But thankfully, anyone can move through the fear to a confident close with the right approach and mindset. Remember Your Why Take some time to look past your sales quotas and commission goals and remember why you do what you do. Think about what makes you passionate about the product or service that youre selling, and list the ways that it ultimately helps people. This is your why. If you approach every close as a chance to personally ensure that a prospect is having t heir needs met and their problems solved - a chance to help and serve them - then it can suddenly binnenseem a little less scary. Yes, a sale does result in a profit, but more importantly, it results in a happy customer. Dont Get Discouraged by a No Hearing no from a prospect doesnt necessarily mean that you should give up and move on. If you ask for a sale and receive a no, it doesnt mean there will be no sale. It often means that the prospect needs more information or you need to help them more clearly see the value of the product or service youre selling. Fear of rejection is often a major source of anxiety for salespeople. In most cases, you shouldnt abandon a close after getting the first - or even third - no, although you may be tempted to. Instead, keep building rapport, asking and answering questions, demonstrating value,and showing your prospect that you can provide the solution to their problems. Finding out why the prospect gave you a no will help you better understa nd a prospects needs so you can better explain how you can meet them. Many successful salespeople look at a no as an opportunity to get to a yes. In fact, you can even ask a prospect what it would take to turn that no into a yes. Have a Plan for Handling Objections By the time you get to the close, you should have a comprehensive understanding of your prospects needs and demonstrated how you can meet them. If you asked the right questions, then you should also have a solid understanding of all of the possible objections that could come up during that particular customers close. If you know the possible objections, then you can prepare responses to them. Or better yet, you can try using the preemptive strike method - bringing up and then busing objections before the prospect even has a chance to do it. You can prepare responses to common objections you see across customers, but also make sure youre able to handle any objections that are particular to that company. Prepared salesp eople are confident closers. Brush up on how to close a sale, whether youre a beginner or a veteran. Get to know at least three basic strategies for closing a sale. Only Promise What You Can Deliver Making promises that youre not certain you can deliver on is bound to cause any salesperson anxiety before the close. But if you enter a closing conversation knowing that you have not over-promised and do not run the risk of under-delivering, then itll be easier for you to view the close as a natural part of the geschftliches miteinander cycle. While you shouldnt fall prey to the attitude of being owed a sale, you can go into the close with more confidence knowing youre done the best you could do to earn the business. Know When its Time to Move On Even the best sales professionals in the world understand that no one can close every sale. Remembering that can help take an awful lot of pressure off your back. And the more relaxed you are during a sales close, the better off you and your prospect will be. If you asked for the sale a few times and cant get the prospect to become a customer, you may need to regroup, develop a new strategy and take some time away from the prospect. Anxiety is often caused when trying too hard to close a deal or trying too often to close a deal that just cant be closed. If you have approached a closing opportunity with a positive attitude, knowing that you have delivered your best and that your proposal is a sound one that makes business sense and your customer simply says not interested, it may be time to move on. Remember The Close is Not the End Another cause of closing anxiety is the belief that closing is the final step of the sales cycle. Closing a sale is actually a chance to begin a new kind of relationship with a prospect. Once you ask for and earn a sale, they become a customer - hopefully a loyal, repeat customer that can be a positive reference for you in the future.

We arent using a bunch of repeatable mathematical equations to rule our time like we might use to come up withhow much money well need before calling it quits.If you cant manage your time, you wont be happy in early retirement. It really is that simple. You cant quit your work structure if you cant replicate that with abetter structure.Its a structure thatyoudesign and impose uponyourself. This is the hard part.And, I cannot teach you how to do this, but I can give you the basic outline of what a s olid structure looks like.What times of the daydo you feel most productive?Are you anearly morning person or a late riser?Are your hobbieseasy enough to pursueon a daily basis?Do you have aone year, two years and five-year goals?Adirectionis critical, and understanding how you work the best is how to set yourself up on the path to head that way.For example,I know that I do mybest work in the morning hours. Therefore, I focus on the most critical aspects of my life in the morning. Everything else takes second priority. The morning is my time to focus.When I can properly focus, I can get my work done on my side projects. I feel productive and motivated to repeat that process the next day and Im actively strutting in the direction that I need to go.The more that you understand about yourself, the better equipped youll be tocustomize your lifein a way that makes sense.Stop worrying about the damn risksFirst, let me preface this discussion with a very simple statementAnything can happen in early retirement. You might fall down a flight of stairs the day after you call it quits, break your leg and undergo a series of painful and expensive surgeries.Or, you might get into a car accident. Or a train wreck. Or contract a disease. Or*fill in the blank*. The point is that yes, things happen. Markets crash. People over-spend.Theres no doubt that quitting your full-timesource of incomein your 30s, and expecting to live not 20, 30, or even 40 more yearstry, 60 or 70, without a dedicated income for more than half of your life, is a risk.But for most of us, its a calculated risk. But, heres an important question that we need to ask ourselves.What about the risks of staying at our jobs? especially stressful ones. AsABC reports A growing body of research stands testament to this fact lack of sleep has been shown to tax the hearts of the stressed executive and the stressed day worker alike.Layoffs, the report continues, can take their psychic and physiologic toll in the executiv e suite and on the production line the burden on those left behind, who work more overtime to shoulder a heavier workload, can be life-shortening and living in fear of losing a job, or staying put in a hostile workplace, also boosts the risk of an earlier cardiac death.I hate the risk ofnot retiring earlymore than the opposite. To work the vast majority of our life and then retire during the portion of our life where weremore likely to get sickis a dreadful thought. To develop krebs. Suffer from mobility-inhibiting aches and pains. Its painful to even think about.Consider this graph fromCancer.gov.The wide majority who develop cancer are above the age of 50.The highest incidents of cancer occur between 65 and 74 which, coincidently, happens to coincide closely with the age that we can draw social security without penalty 62.Does anyone else see a problem with this?Risks run in both directions, ladies and gentlemen. Were wise not to hone in on the risks OF early retirement and ignore the risks of NOT taking your life (and your time) into your own hands.To me, itsway more risky to retire during the period when were most likely to develop a health problemthan it is much earlier in life.At what point do we begin to consider the risks of NOT retiring early and weigh those against the risks of quitting the hinweis race early?Risk is a two-way street, my friends.Every once in a while, do something insaneIvewritten about this one before Comfort zones crush our ability to improve our lives. They keep us wrapped up in a cocoon of mush, complacent and completely relaxed. Reflection and bettering our lives is often the furthest thing from our minds when were in these zones.Instead of going to the gym to begin that new fitness program, we give ourselves an excuse to stay home. Rather than dropping by the neighborhood pot luck to meet the neighbors and network, we catch the latest episode of insert popular TV sitcom here because I honestly have no idea.It is natural to want comfort. And occasionally, theres nothing wrong with a little time in our comfort zones. But spending too much time in this zone is detrimental to our progress. Get out of it.Remember that time that we gave a speech about financial independence in front of hundreds of people? I do, because that was just a couple of months ago at the RV Entrepreneur Summit.Okay, while I wouldnt consider that insane, it definitely got us out of our comfort zones. We were nervous as hell before going up there, but once we got up on stage, everything fell right into place.Confidence is a convenient virtueI am, like, super duper confident. Confident to a fault.I firmly believe that what we are doing is the absolute right thing, and weve made our decision. We are jumping in head first and not looking back. I quit a high paying and relatively low-stress job in theInformation Technology industryfor a life of freedom.And Im damn proud of what were doing.Confidence is very different than arrogance. I dont be lieve that Im always right. I believe that I make the very best decisions that I can base on the information I have at the time. If Im wrong, then Im wrong. Big deal.We fix it and move on.Life sucks when we spend it second-guessing ourselves. So, I dont. I believe that things will work out. I know that we are flexible and will roll with the punches.Im not worried about health care (gasp). I dont care who ourpresidentis. I refuse to let external factors that I cannot control dictate my life. The only thing that I can control is me. My life. My reactions. My motivations.Confidence is key to keeping a sound mind and determined future. The more confident you are, the better prepared youll be to make early retirement work. Why?Because early retirement, just like life, is a mind game. If youwin the battle inside your head, youll win the battle outside of it as well.What does financial independence and early retirement actually mean to you?For me, financial independence is simple it means that you are not beholden to a job to provide for your livelihood.Instead, your wealth acquired through a high level of income or aggressive savings plan, supports your lifestyle. While you may still work, you dont need to. You work because you enjoy it.To my wife, financial independence is a choice. How understanding conversation styles can make you successfulHow understanding conversation styles can make you successfulThough no two peoples conversational styles are exactly alike, tzu siche are patterns that tend to characterize styles.Expecting shorter pauses between turns, and perceiving long pauses as uncomfortable silences, tends to go along with other linguistic habits that together make up what I call high-involvement style.Expecting longer pauses and being more comfortable with silence are among the linguistic habits that make up what I call high-considerateness style.Think about it this way we all want to be considerate, and we all want to show that were involved in a conversation, but speakers of one style tend to place more emphasis on showing involvement, while speakers of the other style tend to emphasize showing considerateness.Lets consider a hypothetical conversation between two friends, Tammy and Carolyn. If Carolyn is telling a story and Tammy encourages her wit h yeah, uh-huh and right, Carolyn probably will assume thats listener talk, and wont feel interrupted. But what if Tammy says whole sentences like I know what you mean the saatkorn thing happened to me. That could feel like listener talk, too - or like an attempt to grab the floor and start telling her own story.And how about if Tammy meant it as listener talk and Carolyn takes it as an attempt to steal the floor? Carolyn might stop talking, thinking she welches interrupted, and Tammy might start her own turn, interpreting Carolyns silence to mean she welches finished. Who created that interruption? Tammy, because she began speaking? Or Carolyn, because she stopped? Id say neither created the interruption single-handedly. It resulted from the differences in their conversational styles.By filling a pause that threatened to become an uncomfortable silence, Tammy was showing enthusiastic listenership, as high-involvement style requires a good person makes sure to show shes involved. B y expecting a listener to be relatively wordless, Carolyn was exercising a high-considerateness style a good person makes sure to leave plenty of room for others to talk.Linguistic habits that go along with high-considerateness style also include standing farther apart (in other words, giving more physical as well as verbal space) speaking more softly and with relatively level pitch and minimal gestures talking more about impersonal topics and less about personal ones being relatively indirect about conveying something negative or getting your way and not asking personal questions.Linguistic habits that go along with high-involvement style include expecting shorter pauses between turns - or maybe no pause at all to avoid an uncomfortable silence, a speaker signals shes ready to relinquish the floor by winding down, expecting a listener to chime in before she comes to a complete stop. It also includes standing closer when you talk speaking in a more animated way and often more loudl y telling more personal stories and making the point of the story relatively dramatic being more relatively direct and asking personal questions to show interest and caring.Differences in habits and assumptions about any of these ways of talking can lead to frustration, even between good friends, because the same way of speaking can have different meanings. Being quiet while listening really can mean youre not interested - and so can starting to speak before your friends finished.For example, Ruth and Alice were taking a walk by a lake, a lovely setting replete with the beauties of flora and fauna. Alice was telling Ruth about something going on in her life, and Ruth was listening with attention and empathy. But Ruth was also enjoying the natural surroundings, and the pleasure of sharing them with her friend. So whenever they passed a particularly pretty or interesting sight - a duck gliding on the surface of the lake with a string of tiny ducklings behind her, or a patch of flowe rs with extraordinary color - Ruth pointed it out.Suddenly Alice burst out You havent listened to a word Ive said Ruth was stunned - and stung. Of course shed been listening. Calling attention to things she thought Alice would want to take notice of did not mean she wasnt. If she didnt point them out while Alice was talking, her friend might miss them by the time her story was over, the thing of interest would be long gone.For Ruth, sharing the beauty of their surroundings was a show of involvement just as surely as was listening to her friends story. Quick comments about something in the environment are not really interruptions, just as a dinner guest might murmur a request to pass the salt without interrupting another dinner guests long story. In both cases, the remarks are obviously fleeting parenthetical asides.But heres where conversational style differences wreak havoc in Alices high-considerateness style, listening means not talking anyone who is talking is not listening. I f that means a listener must forego sharing the beauty of a passing sight - or salt on her food - its a price she has to pay. Both friends have had a lifetime of evidence that their own conversational styles make sense, because members of their families and the people they grew up with shared them.We learn conversational styles at the same time that we learn language, as children growing up, so experience tells us that the way we show good intentions is the right way, and those who play by other rules are wrong.Actually, we rarely realize they are playing by other rules we think theyre breaking rules. (The title of Haru Yamadas book about communication between Japanese and Americans, Different Games, Different Rules, can also apply to communication between people who speak the same language but have different conversational styles.)Of course a listener should be quiet Thats the definition of listening. Of course a listener should talk along to show enthusiasm and involvement Other wise how do you know shes paying attention? Both styles make sense, each in its own way.A good listener can emphasize considerateness by being silent, even if it means forgoing observations that she thinks the speaker would appreciate and a good listener can emphasize involvement at the same time that shes listening - by talking.Talking across styles is all the more difficult because each style fosters its own capabilities. If youre used to hearing listeners talk while youre speaking, it doesnt distract you it encourages you.But if youre used to listeners being quiet, it does you cant keep your focus if someone whos supposed to be listening keeps talking. Its hard to believe that what wouldnt distract you might distract someone else, or that someone else - especially a friend - wouldnt be distracted by what distracts you.Conversational style differences cast doubt on the adage Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
